Lawyer Ashleigh Merchant is calling for a judge to recuse himself from a case, defending other legal counsel held in contempt as part of a high-profile criminal case.Merchant, a criminal defense attorney based in Marietta, Georgia, gained national notoriety by arguing that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified from overseeing Donald Trump's election interference case due to a claimed inappropriate relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade.
Young Thug and 27 others were indicted by Willis for gang-related crimes in 2022. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.Newsweek reached out to Merchant via phone and email for comment.Merchant, who entered the courtroom to defend Steel, told Granville that he couldn't threaten Steel with contempt 'for presenting a motion in good faith.' She told the judge that the court had a 'duty' to alert the defense that ex parte communications were being made.
