More than 50 advocacy groups recently endorsed legislation that would create term limits for Supreme Court Justices.

There are 29 cosponsors, but they are all Democrats so it is unlikely to go anywhere in the Republican-controlled House. However, while the bill may not be popular among Republicans, there was some As of June of 2022, there have been a total of 116 Supreme Court Justices and the average length of service is 16 years, though most serve 20 or more. The longest-serving Justice in history was William O. Douglas, who served 36 years from 1939 to 1975.says that Justices “shall hold their offices during good behavior,” meaning they can technically serve as long as they choose and can only be removed through impeachment.
The TERM Act is not the only legislation with a goal of imposing Supreme Court term limits. It has been tried several times, especially over the last four years.
