The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act is heading to the Senate after Republicans, and even a few Democrats, passed it in the House.

FILE - Voters fill out their ballots for the Michigan primary election, Feb. 27, 2024, in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act is heading to the Senate after Republicans, and even a few Democrats, passed it in the House. However, it will be an uphill battle in the Senate with the Democrat majority and President Joe Biden explicitly saying he would veto the bill if it got to his desk.

The SAVE Act blocks non-citizens from voting in federal elections. Sounds simple enough? But it's stirring up quite the controversy on both sides of the aisle. The biggest argument against it is that there are already protections in place that prevent non-citizens from voting.requiring documented proof of citizenshipto how voters register, how their identities are verified, and how voter lists are maintained and performed year after year.

Despite accusations of redundancy from Democrats, House Republicans argue there have been instances of non-citizens voting in the past, and it could become more prevalent with the influx of illegal migrants in recent years., there have been instances where non-citizens illegally voted in federal elections, but most of them were accidents when people just checked the wrong box.
