Facebook confirms it won’t police lies in political ads by realchriswilson
Facebook announced Thursday that it will maintain its policy of not fact-checking political ads, despite growing public pressure to not allow false information by candidates.
Twitter recently announced a ban on most kinds of political ads, and Google put in place a policy to limit “microtargeting” of voters by political affiliation, although it would still allow advertisers to choose their audience based on demographic information. Leathern said Facebook would allow users to opt out of seeing political and social issues ads entirely.
Story continuesFor nonpolitical ads, Facebook will remove content that can be debunked by third-party fact checkers or promote discrimination. The network also bans ads that contain adult content, promote the sale of tobacco or weapons and anything they deem “shocking, sensational, disrespectful or excessively violent content.”
Zuckerberg called a potential Warren administration an existential threat to his company during a July meeting, the audio of which was published by the Verge last year. In March, the company removed policy-oriented paid ads by the Warren campaign that called for breaking up monopoly tech companies, then reversed itself after criticism.
“So you won’t take down lies, or you will take down lies?” asked Ocasio-Cortez. “I think that’s a pretty simple yes or no.”
