The Federal Aviation Administration is proposing a $633,000 fine against SpaceX for safety violations during two rocket launches last year from Florida . The agency said Tuesday that Elon Musk ’s commercial space company failed to follow requirements of its launch license by using an unapproved launch control room and deleting a mandatory part of the pre-launch checklist during a Falcon 9 launch in May 2023.

SpaceX fined nearly $150,000 by the Environmental Protection Agency for water violations, fuel spill “Safety drives everything we do at the FAA, including a legal responsibility for the safety oversight of companies with commercial space transportation licenses,” Marc Nichols, the FAA’s chief counsel, said in a statement. “Failure of a company to comply with the safety requirements will result in consequences.

SpaceX fined $3,750 for breaking clean water laws in South Texas, but slowdown is bigger penalty The FAA proposed a fine of $175,000 for each of those actions for a total of $350,000. In July 2023, the company submitted a revision to its “explosive site plan” for its launches at Kennedy Space Center. It outlined a newly constructed rocket propellant farm for the launch site. As the FAA reviewed the proposal, SpaceX used the unapproved rocket fuel farm for a July 28 Falcon Heavy launch.
