Rob Lowe, Natasha Lyonne, and other stars have joined the fight as the members of the Writers Guild officially begin their strike.

, who was stationed at the Fox lot, said that as negotiations progressed, it became increasingly clear that they wouldn’t be able to reach a deal before the WGA’s May 1 contract deadline. “The companies came back to us and said, we can make you a slightly better offer if you take off all the things from the table we don't want to talk about. But we couldn't make that deal. …and at that point there was no point in continuing.

He continued, “During the years when they say they're not doing particularly well, apparently the CEOs have managed to raise their salaries by a substantial amount. I assume they made an argument to these struggling companies that says that they were worth the value of that increase.

Television writers in particular have been squeezed by the rise of streaming. While the explosion of programming has brought a lot of new writers into the industry, it has also made it harder for the majority of them to make a stable living. That is in part thanks to the rise ofwhich some of the WGA’s contract demands are designed to fix by demanding a set number of writers that must be in a room and improving the pay rate.
