Former Astros catcher Christian Vázquez gets 3-year deal from Twins
for Astros prospects Wilyer Abreu and infielder Enmanuel Valdez, agreed Monday to a free-agent contract with the Minnesota Twins. The deal was reported to be for three years and $30 million.
The Astros employed Vázquez, who was Boston's primary catcher, as a backup to Martín Maldonado. Vázquez figures to battle Ryan Jeffers for playing time in Minnesota. Both bat righthanded. A career .261/.310/.386 hitter, Vázquez slashed .250/.278/.308 with one home run in 35 games for the Astros, with whom he won his second championship ring. His first came with the 2018 Red Sox.
His most memorable night of the 2022 season came in Game 4 of the World Series at Philadelphia, where he caught a combined no-hitter. Berra caught the only other World Series no-no, a perfect game thrown by the Yankees' Don Larsen in 1956. Vázquez also made his last at-bat as an Astro a memorable one.
