Evil Dead Rise used so much stage blood that they had to go to great lengths in order to get it all made. The film, which is set to release in theaters on April 21, is the fifth film in the franchise following the various ways Candarian demons possess and mutilate human beings.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SlashFilm recently had the opportunity to sit down with Cronin to discuss the impending release of Evil Dead Rise. During the conversation, he revealed that they used over 1,700 gallons of stage blood, which is enough to fill about four 4-6 person hot tubs. The quantity they required was so vast that they had to "hire an industrial kitchen" in order to make it happen.
[It's] all proper sticky, icky movie blood. Like the real deal. There's no cheating of taking some water and putting red food coloring in. Because that will not do. This was all cooked. We had to hire an industrial kitchen to make the amount of blood that we needed, and it was everywhere. So yeah, it's the real deal. And it's splattered all over the screen.
The average horror outing, especially in the slasher subgenre, only deploys blood when it comes to the death of a character. However, the supernatural premise of the Evil Dead films allows for the human body to be pushed far beyond its normal limits. The playful but brutal Candarian demons use extremity to shock potential victims, which results in wounds spurting copious amounts of blood, far more than the human body's typical 1.5 gallons.
One way the Evil Dead remake upped the ante was by soaking the entire third act with a literal rainfall of blood. While Evil Dead Rise likely won't recapture that particular moment, Cronin seems like he has found plenty of ways to bring gruesome glory to the screen. It remains to be seen what the bloodiest moments of the film turn out to be, but the fifth film is already no slouch when it comes to keeping the gory franchise torch alive.
