Meg 2: The Trench's trailer features a slew of easter eggs to classic monster movies from Jaws to Jurassic Park, to King Kong, to... Deep Blue Sea?
While Meg 2: The Trench promises some brand-new creature feature action, its trailer is overflowing with references and easter eggs for earlier monster movies. The monster movie genre has a long and storied history that dates back to the birth of Hollywood. Creature features have been making millions since 1933’s King Kong and director Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is even often called the first modern blockbuster. However, the monster movie’s history doesn’t end there.
9 Jaws Speaking of Spielberg’s classic blockbusters, Meg 2: The Trench’s trailer wouldn’t be complete without a nod to Jaws. There is a shot of the shark’s eye reflecting the inhabitants of a submarine that inverts the famous jump scare when the heroes investigate Ben Gardner’s boat, but that is the subtler of the promo’s two Jaws references. The shot of three massive fins zooming toward a beach resembles the famous image of the shark’s foreboding dorsal fin in Jaws.
6 Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus Released in 2009, Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus is a rare original title from The Asylum. A studio infamous for ripping off Hollywood blockbusters with soundalike titles, The Asylum came up with an original premise with this story of two prehistoric aquatic titans fighting it out. The octopus’s presence in the beach scenes of Meg 2: The Trench’s trailer implies that both it and a Meg will likely face off.
