FEMA will be testing the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts at 11:20 a.m. Pacific time on Oct. 4. Cellphones will be sent a test message as long as your phone is “switched on, within range of an active cell tower, and whose wireless provider participates in WEA,”. Your message will be in either English or Spanish, depending on which language setting you have on your phone. The message will start with “THIS IS A TEST,” and let you know that “no action is needed.

On your TV or radio, the test will last about a minute. An alert will sound, followed by the message, “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System.”“The purpose of the Oct. 4 test is to ensure that the systems continue to be effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level,” FEMA said in a statement. “In case the Oct. 4 test is postponed due to widespread severe weather or other significant events, the back-up testing date is Oct. 11.
