On the panel, Maria Shriver said that mental symptoms caused by menopause often go undiagnosed, underscoring the need for people experiencing menopause to advocate for themselves when they see a health care provider. “Most people at Oprah’s age, when they would go [to the doctor], a lot of times, they’re like, ‘You need antidepressants,’” Shriver said. “They diagnose you with…midlife depression [or] anxiety.
As for the heart palpitations, Winfrey said that she figured out what was going on with no help from the five medical professionals she had consulted about the problem. She learned that the symptom was connected to menopause by chance, while reading at work one day. “I just happened to be in the office…and opened a book and saw, ‘Heart palpitations symptoms of menopause,’” she said.
Winfrey acknowledged the importance of having open and honest conversations about menopause. “For generations, millions and millions of women have suffered the symptoms of menopause and suffered in silence,” she said. “It’s been shrouded in stigma and shrouded in shame. Women have told me they feel invisible as if their very selves are disappearing. But we are flipping that script today.”
