California voters overwhelmingly support a measure, Proposition 1, that would amend the state constitution to ensure access to abortion and contraception throughout the state.A new poll released Wednesday by the UCfound at least 65% of voters in the Golden State’s most conservative regions — from the North Coast to the Sierras to the Central Valley to the Inland Empire — support the abortion measure, a resounding result that could have implications up and down the ballot in November’s midterms.
John Pitney, a professor of government at Claremont McKenna College, says that the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning the 1973 landmark abortion ruling Roe v. Wade has already shown signs of improving the prospects of Democratic candidates throughout the country.held since the court released its decision in June.
“I think the numbers are encouraging but it’s also just a poll, so we can’t assume anything,” she said A large majority of Democrats surveyed rate the issue of abortion as “very important.” Meanwhile, only 43% of Republicans said the issue was “very important” to their upcoming vote.
