In December, the U.S. State Department said that Russia rejected a proposal that would have included the release of Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan. His father said the address was a sign that "everybody in the U.S. government -- the Senate and Congress and the White House -- are taking the freedom of the press seriously, and that's important."
