BRUSSELS - European Union leaders will this week urge the G20 to help reform the World Trade Organization in order to preserve a rules-based system which is under threat from an escalating trade war between China and the United States.
European Council President Donald Tusk and the head of the executive European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker have written to the EU’s 28 leaders saying that they will push in Osaka to continue the WTO reform agreed by the G20 last year. China and the United States have already imposed tariffs of up to 25% on hundreds of billions of dollars of each other’s goods in a trade war that has lasted nearly a year.
