Empowerment for parents in Texas education would improve with new legislation | Opinion

Students held up signs as demonstrators marched on the Texas Capitol grounds to show their support for expanding school choice options during National School Choice Week. School choice programs have an effect on students’ likelihood to graduate high school, enroll in college or attain a college degree, writes Ron Simmons.

However, the good news is Gov. Greg Abbott has made parental empowerment one of his top agenda items for this legislative session and, thanks in part to the leadership of Texas Sen. Brandon Creighton, chairman of the Senate Education Committee, and Rep. James Frank ,there are several pieces of legislation relating to parental empowerment that have been filed in recent weeks by members of the Texas Legislature.

A handful of Universal Education Savings Account bills promise every child more choices and every parent more input in their child’s education. The proposed legislation includes an education savings account established for each student participating with up to $8,000 that could be put towards tuition, tutoring, special needs programs and other valuable tools. Students could use their funds at public, private or charter schools and could take classes at colleges.
