Emergency responders are moving survivors of a massive landslide feared to have buried scores of people to safer ground as tons of unstable earth and tribal warfare, which is rife in the Papua New Guinea Highlands, threaten the rescue effort

In this photo provided by the International Organization for Migration, people cross over the landslide area to get to the other side in Yambali village, Papua New Guinea, Friday, May 24, 2024. More than 100 people are believed to have been killed in the landslide that buried a village and an emergency response is underway, officials in the South Pacific island nation said. The landslide struck Enga province, about 600 kilometers northwest of the capital, Port Moresby, at roughly 3 a.m.

“Hopes to take the people out alive from the rubble have diminished now,” Aktoprak told The Associated Press. Aktoprak said he did not expect tribal combatants would target the convoys but noted that opportunistic criminals might take advantage of the mayhem to do so. “Because of tribal fights, other displaced people had moved into the area, so they do expect that the population is much bigger than the official figures indicate,” McMahon added.

McMahon said there were other health facilities in the region, that the provincial government was sending health workers and the World Health Organization was mobilizing staff.
