The Bexar County medical examiner, which also provides forensic autopsy services for many rural counties, has grappled with unprecedented growth in caseloads and a staffing shortage.

The medical examiner, lawfully mandated to determine the cause and manner of death of people who die violently, suddenly or unexpectedly, has endured an unprecedented workload and staffing shortage. This is a department our county can’t do without, yet we question if enough is being done to keep it functioning.

Over the past three years, the department, which also provides forensic autopsy services for many rural counties, has grappled with unprecedented workload — an increase of more than 30 percent in caseloads for death investigations and certifications. Normally, the office sees 5 percent growth per year.
