Crews battling the Eaton fire made significant progress overnight, achieving 45% containment. While winds caused some concern, they are expected to die down. The Palisades fire is also showing improvement, with 19% containment. The death toll from both fires has risen to 25.
Crews battling the Eaton fire made significant gains overnight and now have containment lines around nearly half of the fire, authorities said on Wednesday morning. The fire remained at 14,117 charred acres, but it was 45% contained, Angeles National Forest officials said. Though less than expected, winds did pick up north of Los Angeles proper early Wednesday morning, primarily affecting north Hollywood, Pasadena and the mountains, National Weather Service meteorologist James Brotherton said.
Gusts up to 50 miles per hour blew across the Eaton fire footprint as firefighters continued battling that blaze. Brotherton said the winds, though, began to die off and were expected to continue doing so until 3 p.m., when the red flag warning expires. A red flag signals that the weather is dangerous in terms of aiding the spread of fires. The death toll the fires on Tuesday reached 25 people, as remains were found within the Palisades burn area, according to the Medical Examiner’s office. Remains were also found in Altadena on Tuesday, but it was later determined they were not human. Sheriff’s investigators were investigating 34 missing-persons cases associated with the fires. Damage-assessment teams were combing both of the blaze’s destructive paths. Combined, the fires have damaged or destroyed an estimated 12,000-plus structures, officials have said
