When Eagles fans were polled on the team’s decision to draft Jalen Hurts, 61% graded the pick as an F. Then he became the superstar that took Philadelphia to the Super Bowl.

PHOENIX—Fans of the Philadelphia Eagles aren’t exactly known for their restraint, and the only thing that stopped them from rioting when the team used a second-round pick on a quarterback named Jalen Hurts in 2020 may have been that it happened during the early pandemic lockdowns., 61% gave it a big fat F. The second most popular grade: D.

To understand why it blew so many people’s minds when Roger Goodell, from his basement, announced Hurts as the Eagles selection it helps to remember the batty sequence of events that took place in Philadelphia over the prior four seasons. The team looked like it had solved its quarterback woes when it selected Carson Wentz with the No. 2 pick in 2016. By Wentz’s second year in the league, he was a legitimate contender to be the league’s most valuable player.

The cost of settling on the wrong quarterback is enormous in two ways. Once big-time quarterbacks get a second contract, they’re the highest paid players on any given team—by far. And if that quarterback doesn’t live up to expectations, teams tend not to perform particularly well when their most important asset plays in a way that makes that deal obviously overvalued.

There’s an obvious opportunity cost to the approach. Using a high pick on another quarterback who might not play means not using it on someone who has a direct path to help the team win immediately.
