The Department for Work and Pensions has alerted benefit claimants and state pension recipients to potential disruptions in payment schedules and Jobcentre Plus services due to the bank holidays on May 4th and May 25th. Payments falling on these dates will be processed earlier, and office/phone line availability will be limited.
The Department for Work and Pensions has issued a warning to all benefit claimants and those who may need to visit Jobcentre Plus offices across Great Britain during particular days in May.
The two bank holiday weekends in May, falling on Monday, May 4, and Monday, May 25, will disrupt opening hours for these centres and their telephone lines. Both bank holidays will also affect when claimants receive their benefit and state pension payments from the DWP. Bank holidays are typically not considered working days, even within government departments, meaning the extended weekends have the potential to cause considerable disruption for those needing to contact departments or awaiting updates and payments.
The DWP confirmed on X that Jobcentre Plus offices and telephone lines will operate as normal on Friday, May 1, and will only reopen on Tuesday, May 5. Even those accessing their Universal Credit accounts online may only receive a response once the bank holiday has concluded. The second May bank holiday later in the month is expected to follow a similar pattern, with offices and telephone lines remaining closed on May 25 and reopening on Tuesday, May 26.
DWP payments due on May 4 and May 25 will not be processed on these dates, as banks will largely be closed and unable to handle transactions. As a consequence, the vast majority of benefit and state pension recipients anticipating payments on these dates will instead receive them on the last working day prior.
Claimants of benefits and state pensions may notice a number of changes to their payments in May, as the annual increases will come into effect for the first time for some, while the bank holidays could result in thousands receiving their payments several days earlier than expected. For those due to receive payments on May 4, the first working day beforehand falls on Friday, May 1.
Similarly, those anticipating payments on May 25 will instead receive them on May 22, the DWP has confirmed. Benefits that will be affected by both bank holidays: State pension payments will likewise be impacted by both bank holidays. Those expecting these early payments will not need to take any action, with payments reverting to their usual schedule from June onwards. Managing finances can become considerably more difficult when payment dates are moved forward.
This means the same amount of money must stretch across four additional days before your regular payment date, particularly given that April's bank holidays also caused disruption.
