The Dutch Prime Minister issued his resignation from office on Saturday, bringing an end to one of the country's longest-serving political leaders in decades.
Mark Rutte established his fourth and latest government in January 2022, following ten-months of negotiating measures surrounding the issue of immigration across four political parties.“It’s no secret that the coalition parties think very differently about asylum policy and today we unfortunately need to draw the conclusion that the differences are unbridgeable,” Rutte explained Friday night during a press conference. “The fall of a government is never good.
The Netherlands anticipates approximately 45,000 immigrants entering the country in 2024—amounting to roughly the same number it welcomed last year. This follows Rutte's attempts to negotiate more strict policies as it relates to refugees emmigrating from countries at war. Dutch King Willem-Alexander cut his vacation short in Greece in order to receive outgoing prime minister's resignation.“The Netherlands is waiting for solutions and not for postponement,” Rutte said on Saturday.
Rutte was first elected as prime minister in October 2010, with his longest coalition government lasting five-years, and this latest spanning just 18-months.
