This embrace of grit has stood to him in his playing and coaching careers. He was a cornerstone of the Los Angeles Dodgers team that was the late ‘70s foil to the New York Yankees, losing twice in the fall classic to the vintage Yanks. Baker notched a National League Most Valuable Player award during these struggles. Finally, in 1981, the Dodgers won the World Series.
Baker took the Giants to the World Series in 2002, losing in the most painful way possible — Game Seven. His personable nature made a lot of people root for him, even as it seemed like his chance to be a champion as coach had passed.
