The series, set thousands of years before the events of the Dune films, explores the origins of the Bene Gesserit and their role in shaping the future.
The upcoming series, based on Frank Herbert 's novel (as well as Denis Villeneuve’s two-part movie adaptation of that book) follows the Bene Gesserit sisterhood (including characters played by Emily Watson and Olivia Williams) as they set in motion the prophecy that ultimately pays off centuries later. The series also stars Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, and Mark Strong as the current Emperor.
Although none of the characters from the films appear (this is thousands of years prior to the movies) there are members of House Harkonnen and House Atreides, plus members of the Fremen, as well as plenty of drama around control of the universe as well as Arrakis and its all-important spice. Initially, film writer Jon Spaihts was involved as producer and showrunner, but the series was eventually tweaked and Spaihts was replaced by Alison Schapker. With WBD continuing to expand this fictional universe, the new series can only be seen as a good sign
