Based on Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel of the same name, the film follows Paul Atreides and his alliance with the Fremen after the fall of his house on the planet Arrakis.
MacLachlan: In the book, the structure was that I’m drawn into this fight and I don’t want to fight. There’s a delay, so it doesn’t happen right then; we go back, and it’s more a ceremonial thing. What I’m trying to get at is there’s a period of time between the actual killing and the realization.
MacLachlan: All of a sudden, that’s all been squeezed like this. I’m like, “All right, so I’m killing him and now I’m supposed to be crying.” I was young, and when you’re that age, that’s one of the things that stops you dead in your tracks, because you know what’s coming and you’re like, “Ahhh, I don’t know.” But I wasn’t really helped by the situation, to be honest, looking back.
Why Paul's Fight With Jamis Is Important Despite the trouble MacLachlan had filming the scene, Lynch continued to let him try multiple times before the scene was cut out of the movie. Even though he gave it his best efforts, MacLachlan was ultimately happy the scene was cut, as he didn't believe his performance in the existing cuts was convincing enough. The scene of Paul and Jamis' duel in Dune 2021 would ultimately adapt the portions of fight that were cut in Lynch's version.
