A new CDC report indicates an increase in drowning rates in the U.S., with the COVID-19 pandemic cited as a potential factor.
Drowning rates in the United States are on the rise after decades of decline, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .The CDC says the causes are likely complex, but disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic may be one reason.'Children were unable to take swimming lessons and many aquatic programs were unable to operate. Lifeguard training stopped. So this limited the availability of safe places to swim,' said Dr.
Clemens said increases occurred across most age groups, but rates were the highest in young children.In fact, the CDC says it's the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4.'We are really concerned at these increases, and they underscore the need for implementing proven drowning prevention strategies,' Clemens said.These strategies include installing four-sided pool fencing, using life jackets and learning CPR.
