The seemingly simple act of dropping off a passenger is a lot harder than it seems, especially for self-driving driverless autonomous cars
Dropping off passengers is not easy, especially if being done safely, and it is a vexing problem for humans and autonomous cars. Photocredit: GettyI was using a ridesharing service last month in Detroit to get to a restaurant after having spoken at a conference on autonomous vehicles.
Anyway, undeterred, the driver opted to pull into the bus zone, coming to a rapid stop, and by an unlucky chance for him , sure enough a large bus tried to come into the zone at just that same moment. The ridesharing driver started to yell at me to hurriedly get out of his car since the bus was now directly behind us and things were dicey.
In one sense, when we are dropped off from a ridesharing service or its equivalent, we often tend to assume that the driver has identified a suitable place to do the drop-off. In some cases, when driving a car ourselves, we make judgments about when to get out of the vehicle, and in other cases such as ridesharing or taking a taxi, we are having someone else make a judgement for us.
