Minor injuries reported in railroad accident in Mannington

Two people were injured Saturday morning when a semi-truck towing a semi-trailer collided with a passenger train at a railroad crossing in Salem County, New Jersey State Police said.

The crash occurred just after 11 a.m. at the Acton Station Road crossing in Mannington Township when the truck failed to yield to an SMS Rail Lines engine pulling a single car with 15 passengers aboard. The train struck the truck on the passenger side, which caused the semi-trailer to detach and flip over in an adjacent field. The train came to a halt when the rear axle derailed, state police said.

The train conductor sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. The driver of the truck refused medical attention at the scene. None of the passengers aboard the train were injured, and they later boarded a bus to their destination, state police said. SMS is a shortline railroad that operates 6.5 miles of tracks at the Pureland Industrial Park in Bridgeport in Gloucester County. The railway also has four miles of track in an industrial park in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, according to the company’s website.Local journalism needs your support.
