New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye defends coach Jerod Mayo despite the team's 3-11 record and mounting pressure.
After suffering their fourth consecutive loss on Sunday, pushing their record to 3-11, questions have emerged about Patriots coach Jerod Mayo 's job security. Speaking at a podium on Wednesday as his team prepares to face the Bills this weekend, New England's rookie quarterback Drake Maye expressed confidence in his head coach. Maye acknowledged the challenges of Mayo's first year as head coach, stating, 'It's his first year coaching, being a head coach.
It's a tough challenge for the New England Patriots. It's a lot of responsibility being the quarterback, same thing as the head coach... He's figuring it out. The 22-year-old Maye emphasized that the entire Patriots locker room stands behind Mayo. He said, 'I think our players, we're behind him. We're backing him. We trust the plan he's got for us and we trust what he says in the team meeting rooms, and all his little sayings that he has. We believe in it and we're bought into it. I think the results are coming. I think they're coming. Everybody wishes they were now and I think we're kind of striving for that... the winning is coming in the near future.' Maye has been a bright spot for New England in their first season post-Bill Belichick. He has completed over 68% of his passes for 1,898 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Maye has also shown promise as a runner, scoring two touchdowns and rushing for nearly 400 yards. Despite Maye's performance, the rest of the team has struggled with penalties, allowing 25+ points in each of their last four games. This has led to speculation about the team's direction in 2025
