For hundreds of years our people have gathered at this sacred place to witness the solstice and other celestial events. Numerous other medicine wheels contain tracking markers to record the sun’s progress. It was a time when our people would visit, tell stories, and celebrate the return of the longer days. It’s a time of new beginnings and the honouring of the gift of light. It is also a time to reflect on the past and make plans for the future.Article content

For example, before European contact, lac Saint Anne in Alberta was a sacred lake for our people. The early missionaries saw this and rebranded it with a saint’s name, and now it is the location of a major Catholic pilgrimage. It was the lake that the pope visited last summer.The early church appropriated the feast of Saturn and made it Christmas. There is no proof of Jesus’s birthdate, so the church piggybacked on the Roman feast of Saturn or Saturnalia.
