For the past 30 years, Cindy Blackstock has been on the front lines of change for Indigenous children in Canada, who still face injustice.
Blackstock received the World Children’s Prize for her decades-long tireless dedication to improving the lives of Indigenous children. The award was presented by Queen Silvia of Sweden in a ceremony at Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred, Sweden. The World Children’s Prize is also known as the children’s Nobel Prize, and it is uniquely selected. A jury selects three Child Rights Heroes and the list is taken to millions of children around the world who vote for their favourite.
However, she still experienced the racism in the classroom and on the playground. She has an undergraduate degree from UBC, two masters degrees, one from McGill in Montreal and the other from Loyola in Chicago, and a PhD in social work from the University of Toronto. The jurisdictional dispute was never solved and Jordan died at age five waiting for a decision. He never saw his home community.

It sounds simple, but it reflects the disputes around constitutional responsibility that plague our people.
But for many of us she is an inspiration. Her humanity extends beyond the degrees and awards. She is the First Nations’ Mother Teresa.
