At a hearing Thursday, prosecutors asked a U.S. district judge to decide whether a lawyer representing one of Trump's co-defendants in the Mar-a-Lago documents case has a conflict of interest.
Former president and 2024 Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump gestures during a campaign event in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Oct. 11. He did not appear in nearby Fort Pierce for a court hearing the next day.At a hearing in Fort Pierce, Fla., prosecutors asked U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon to decide whether a lawyer representing one of Trump's co-defendants in the Mar-a-Lago documents case has a conflict of interest.
Cannon found no problem with John Irving, the lawyer who is representing De Oliveira, and allowed him to waive his constitutional right to an independent counsel. Prosecutors say Woodward should not be allowed to question his former client at trial or try to undercut his credibility as a witness. They said Woodward's conflict of interest may be raised with the jury, a possibility that clearly troubled Cannon. She adjourned the hearing, postponing until later a decision about Woodward's representation of Nauta.A key question remains about when this trial will begin. Cannon has proposed beginning it in May.
