The image was of a Trump campaign poster for 2024 and played on his critics' fears that he will seek a third term despite the constitutional limit of two.
There is, of course, another way Trump could stand in 2024: By losing the election in 2020. The two terms do not have to run concurrently and were Trump to lose the next election, he could put his hat in the ring again for the one after.
At his rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina, this week, Trump noted that the U.S. is set to host the FIFA World Cup in the future—and again suggested he could run for a third term. "We've got a problem: It's in 2026," Trump told his supporters."And I said, well wait a minute, under the normal rules I'll be out in 2024. So we may have to go for an extra term, OK?" Trump continued as the crowd cheered.
"Oh they're going crazy, they're going crazy. Tomorrow you're going to see headlines, 'Trump wants an extra term, I told you, I told you.' He wants an extra term, ladies and gentlemen. We told you. We told you, he's a dictator."Back in June, MSNBC's Chuck Todd asked Trump about the third term jokes."I only joke, I only joke," Trump said."I joke and I say watch, I will drive Chuck Todd crazy.
"I said in a speech recently, I said watch, we'll drive the media crazy, let's go for a third term and then a fourth. And some of the media said he is going to do it," he added.U.S. President Donald Trump takes the stage during the National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week Conference at the Renaissance Hotel September 10, 2019 in Washington, DC. Trump tweeted suggesting he would run for a third term in 2024.
