Attorney Alan Dershowitz spoke about his thoughts on former President Donald Trump’s third indictment, saying the standard should be very high to charge a presidential candidate with federal crimes.

On Tuesday, Trump was indicted on charges related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. In an interview with Newsmax's Greta Van Susteren, Dershowitz commented on the news.“It's just not strong enough or specific enough to satisfy the very high standard that's required when a president of the United States allows his Justice Department to indict his opponent and influence the outcome of the election,” Dershowitz said.

“It doesn't satisfy the high standard that should be required when you're going after your political opponent. That's banana republic when you go after your political opponents by indicting them,” he added. Special counsel Jack Smith of the Justice Department released another indictment against the former president on Tuesday. It was related to his alleged role in trying to overturn the last presidential election and inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.Dershowitz reiterated his legal perspective on the latest and previous indictments, saying Trump is being treated unfairly.

“The standard has to be so high for that, and it does not look like it's been met by this indictment,” he said. “It certainly wasn't met by the indictment in New York, and questionable whether it was met by the indictment in Florida, or will be met by the indictment in Fulton County.”
