A Fountain man who allegedly exchanged fire with police officers responding to a domestic violence call Nov. 20 has died of his wounds, according to an update Saturday from the Fountain Police Department.

Ross Milton Floersheim, 41, was shot at the 6900 block of Village Meadows Drive in Fountain after police responded to a call from a woman saying her husband, who was intoxicated, refused to let her and her son leave their home. The woman escaped to a neighbor’s house to make an emergency call and reported that her son was still inside the home.

Floersheim allegedly fired at least one round at officers shortly after they arrived. Fountain Officer Brett Ryder returned fire and hit Floersheim, according to the department. Ryder is on paid administrative leave while the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office investigates the shooting. After being shot, Floersheim was taken into custody and transported to a hospital, where he continued to receive treatment for his injuries until his death Friday. The county coroner’s office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
