China's bionic dolphin skin propeller promises to revolutionize marine transport by cutting fuel use and emissions.

The propeller can save more than 300 tons of fuel annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 900 tons.In a bid to revolutionize marine transportation, China has developed a bionic skin propeller, which it claims is inspired by dolphin skin. During a trial run, a 300,000-ton very large crude carrier equipped with the propeller completed three oil delivery trips.

Due to the decreased energy consumption, China estimates the VLCC will save over 300 tons of fuel annually. This, in turn, can result in direct economic benefits exceeding $140,000 and a reduction of over 900 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.. This thrust overcomes the resistance between the ship’s hull and the water, propelling the ship forward, as explained by China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency.

When the epidermal mucus provides lubrication, it minimizes the turbulent kinetic energy of the water flow. Using the artificial skin synthesis method, the researchers developed bionic skin similar to that of dolphins.
