Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dustin May reveals how a routine salad nearly cost him his life, leading to emergency surgery. May's wife urged him to seek medical help after a bite of lettuce triggered a severe esophageal rupture. He details the harrowing experience and how it changed his perspective on life.
A seemingly innocuous bite of salad nearly cost Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Dustin May his life. In July, May underwent a season-ending esophagus surgery, revealing that a bite of lettuce he consumed 15 minutes prior triggered a severe reaction. 'It was definitely a life-altering event,' May told the Los Angeles Times. 'It was definitely very serious. It's not a very common surgery. It was definitely an emergency.
'I probably wouldn't have made it through the night if I didn't have it,' May added. Initially, the 27-year-old experienced a 'mega-painful' sensation after swallowing the lettuce, feeling the pain in his throat that eventually subsided. While May initially brushed aside any concern once the pain went away, his wife, Millie, urged him to seek medical attention at the emergency room. This is when doctors discovered that the rupture of his esophagus was severe enough to require emergency surgery. May described the surgery as 'essentially a full abdominal surgery.' At the time of the incident, May was preparing to begin a rehabilitation stint in the minor leagues as he was recovering from a Tommy John revision and surgery for a flexor tendon injury. Instead of making a comeback for the eventual World Series champions, May had to start his rehabilitation journey all over again. He couldn't resume light throwing until November and was advised to avoid lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds for six months. The entire ordeal forced May to re-evaluate his perspective on life. 'It just kind of gives me a different viewpoint on a lot of things in life,' May told the Los Angeles Times. 'Just seeing how something so non-baseball-related can just be like — it can be gone in a second. And the stuff it put my wife through, it definitely gave me of, ‘Wow, stuff can change like that.' It was definitely very scary.' May received clearance to begin full-strength training in January. He is optimistic about contributing to the Dodgers' formidable rotation, which could include star players like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Rori Sasaki when the season begins. However, May, who was considered one of the Dodgers' top prospects when he made his MLB debut in 2019, has only made 46 appearances since then, with 2020 being the only season where he started at least 10 games. He boasts a 12-9 record with a 3.10 ERA throughout his career. 'If I’m healthy, I feel like I have a spot on this rotation,' May said. 'I just have to go out and prove that.'
