Doctor Who's newest lead, Ncuti Gatwa, reveals that he drunkenly told former Doctor Matt Smith about his casting well before it was announced.
Before it was even announced, Ncuti Gatwa told former Doctor Who lead Matt Smith that he had been cast as the Fifteenth Doctor while drunk. Gatwa was confirmed to be portraying the next incarnation of the sci-fi series' central Time Lord last year, and is set to follow David Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor in a seasonal episode expected to air in the fall. He will then star alongside new companion Millie Gibson in Doctor Who season 14, which is currently filming and will premiere in 2024.
Gatwa reflects on his experience joining Doctor Who during a recent interview with Rolling Stone UK, where he revealed he had a surprise encounter with a former series star. Prior to his official casting reveal, Gatwa ran into Eleventh Doctor actor Smith at a party, where he struck up a conversation. Gatwa says he drunkenly revealed his casting to Smith by telling him, "I’m following in your footsteps!" Smith was confused by this until the official announcement was made.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Ncuti Gatwa Has Already Received Support From Many Former Doctor Who Stars While Smith may have been confused by his first meeting with Gatwa, he soon offered his support for the new Doctor Who star.
Alongside Smith, Capaldi, and Whittaker, other stars who portrayed the Doctor have praised Gatwa's casting. Colin Baker, Paul McGann, and Christopher Eccleston shared supportive messages on social media and in interviews following the announcement. Meanwhile, Sylvester McCoy welcomed Gatwa to Doctor Who in a video message.
It is heartwarming to see the various former Doctors come together to support Gatwa ahead of his arrival in the TARDIS. Many may be surprised and amused at how Gatwa's initial meeting with Smith didn't go exactly as planned. Regardless, with Smith offering his own strong supportive message following the official announcement, it is clear that Gatwa has received plenty of support from those who came before him, creating more anticipation for his Doctor Who debut.
