'Do not start a fire outside': Statewide burn ban in effect on Washington DNR lands

The DNR enacted a statewide burn ban that began at 1 p.m. Wednesday as hot, dry weather conditions increase wildfire dangers.

The news comes as numerous wildfires areThe DNR's order bans outdoor burning , campfires, the use of charcoal briquettes and prescribed burns on all forest land the DNR manages through Sept. 30. That date is subject to change, the DNR said.

“The record-breaking temperatures we are seeing this week have left our state bone dry,” Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz said via statement. “I am asking everyone in Washington to do their part to protect our firefighters and our communities this summer. Please do not start a fire outside and stay alert when you are outdoors.”Officials said the restriction is a "critical step to reduce potential wildfire ignition sources.

"Officials urge members of the public recreating outside to stay prepared during fire season, including by being alert to rapid environmental changes, checking restrictions and conditions before heading out, ensuring tow chains are properly secured and not dragging on pavement, and staying on established trails," the DNR wrote online.
