A suspect is behind bars over 20 years after a young girl reported a sexual assault in Auburn.
AUBURN, Ala. - In October 2003, a young girl in Auburn survived what police describe as “multiple acts of sexual violence.” Now, over 20 years later, a suspect is behind bars.
The investigation began on Oct. 4, 2003, when the juvenile victim made the report to Auburn police. Investigators say she told them a man forced her into some woods near Lee Road 57 and sexually assaulted her. Police say the physical evidence and suspect description couldn’t lead them to a suspect at the time.
The case remained under investigation until January of this year, when Auburn cold case investigators said evidence sent through the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System yielded a suspect. That man was identified as Bobby Lee Pitts, 75, of Auburn. Investigators say the DNA evidence concluded Pitts was the offender. A grand jury subsequently returned indictments of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.Police Chief Cedric Anderson posted a statement saying, “I hope this sends a powerful message: that no matter how much time has passed, we will never relent in our pursuit of justice. Every case matters deeply to us, and we will continue to pursue truth and accountability. Today, we stand firm in our promise.
