Last year, Highland Park’s Day of the Dead event launched at the West Ridge Center, and was so successful that another venue was needed to accommodate what might become an annual tradition, according to Jessica Reyes, the assistant director of recreation for the Park District of Highland Park.

An estimated 300 people attended Saturday’s Day of the Dead celebration at the Highland Park Recreation Center. The Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is a tradition in Mexico and other parts of the world held in early November to honor the memory and heritage of departed loved ones.

As they were preparing to exit the event, Maria’s daughter Diana of Highwood stopped to see the photo, which resulted in the unexpected consoling of daughter Dayana, 10. Dayana dabbed an eye to keep tears from causing the youngster’s facial makeup to run. An apple was placed next to Maria Guerrero’s picture frame.
