The Garden State was stuck in a very stormy weather pattern, with dozens of storm warnings and watches issued by the National Weather Service.

, said the statistics cover the past 34 years, going back to 1989, and the 15 thunderstorm watches in July 2006 was the most ever issued during any calendar month — not just July.

As for tornado warnings, four were issued across the state in July 2023. Although that’s about double the July average, it’s nowhere close to the state record of 22 tornado warnings issued in July 2021 — also a record for any month. “July is the climatological peak of ‘severe weather season’ in our area,” Staarmann noted in an email. “It ramps up steadily by May through June, peaks in July, declines in August, then falls off sharply into September.”

The end result will be “generally fair weather and below-average temperatures” on Wednesday, with afternoon highs hovering around 80 degrees, the agency said in its daily forecast discussion. “As the high pressure moves offshore into Thursday, an approaching system will bring increasing chances of showers and thunderstorms through Friday along with gradually increasing humidity and temperatures.”
