The Department of Homeland Security's Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties is investigating U.S. Customs and Border Protection's referrals of migrants from Muslim countries for prosecution.
says that a “person’s race, religion, sex, national origin or political association, activities or beliefs” should not affect a prosecutor’s decision “to commence or recommend prosecution or take other action against a person.”
“CRCL has opened a complaint investigation pertaining to allegations that CBP’s referrals of noncitizens for criminal prosecutions under 19 U.S.C. § 1459 is targeting individuals from Muslim-majority countries. CRCL is unable to provide further information at this time because the investigation is ongoing,” a department spokesperson said in a statement.“Discriminatory practices not only erode the moral fabric of a society but also tarnish a nation’s reputation on the global stage.
