A developer said Salt Lake Mayor Erin Mendenhall has not followed through on a promise to crack down on homeless camps.
A group of unsheltered Utahns are seen in an encampment in Salt Lake City 's Fairmont Park in the Sugar House neighborhood on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.
A developer whose company has built hundreds of apartments and condominiums in Sugar House said Salt Lake Mayor Erin Mendenhall has not followed through on her pledge to crack down on homeless camps. “We were hopeful things would get better," said John Gardiner, "but instead they’ve gotten much worse.”He said, after complaining about the camps, the city's Rapid Intervention Team---which connects the unsheltered to housing and other resources---was in the park last week, but the camps quickly reemerged.
"People have not been arrested or taken to other shelters from the park," Gardiner insisted, saying he's been told by police they write citations for persistent campers.2News asked questions in a text message to the mayor's spokesman on Wednesday morning, seeking a response. When it happens, we will include it in on reporting.
In a recent release from the city on the mayor's proposed 2025 budget, she proposed doubling the size of the Rapid Intervention Team.
