New city reports spotlight Houston's neglected sidewalks as residents decry lack of spending

for Fiscal Year 2024, the city of Houston allocated $3.3 million to its safe sidewalks program, a part of which will pay for sidewalk improvements in high-priority areas identified in the Gulfton and Kashmere Gardens studies, according to the mayor’s office.

The mayor said his administration will continue to look for additional dollars and implement new projects based on the findings from the latest studies. For instance, Hillcroft, Houston's most densely populated community, has a significant proportion of residents facing transport constraints. Fully 16 percent of its families do not own a car, and 30 percent of its working population over 16 years old rely on walking, biking or public transit. The neighborhood also experiences the city's highest average temperatures and is amongst those most afflicted by traffic accidents.
