'It's not if, it's when,' says ex-NFL GM
CLEVELAND, Ohio - A restructure of Deshaun Watson’s contract is the Browns best path to creating cap room, former NFL general manager Randy Mueller told 19 News.The most common way teams lower a player’s cap number is to convert his base salary into a prorated bonus, thereby reducing his cap number for this season but pushing cap commitments into future years. The player gets the same money, it’s just structured differently for accounting purposes.
That does not include the reported trade for WR Jerry Jeudy, who’s due to make $12.9 million in 2024, the final year of his rookie contract. The free agent tampering period begins today but contracts can’t officially be signed until Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, when the new league year begins.
