Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed several anti-transgender bills Wednesday which ban gender-affirming care for minors, ban children from attending drag shows, and target how students learn about and engage with the LGBTQ+ community.
Trans youth between the ages of 13 and 17 make up about 1.32% of that age group's population in Florida,by the Williams Institute at the University of California-Los Angeles School of Law.
"If a parent wants to engage in that with their kid at those ages, then that's up to them, but we should not be putting that in the curriculum in schools," DeSantis added. "We're not saying you can't learn about these topics at all, we're saying parents need to be in the driver's seat," he added. Joe Saunders, a former Democratic state lawmaker who is now the senior political director at the Equality Florida group, argued that the numerous anti-LGBTQ+ bills passed during this session are being used by DeSantis to appeal to Republican primary voters in a potential 2024 presidential run.
