Celebrity softball game part of 'Barnstorm Birmingham’ Juneteeth celebration

Baseball legends Derek Jeter and Barry Bonds were among dozens of celebrities on-hand for Wednesday night’s “Barnstorm Birmingham” Juneteenth celebration and “Fam Jam” softball game at Rickwood Field.

Jeter and Bonds served as honorary captains for the “Say Heys” and “The Hammers,” the two teams that took part in the celebrity softball games. The teams were named after Baseball Hall-of-Famers and Alabama natives Willie Mays and Henry Aaron . Bonds — the seven-time National League Most Valuable Player and MLB’s all-time leader in home runs — was the godson of Mays, who died Tuesday night. Mays played alongside Bonds’ father, Bobby, with the San Francisco Giants in the early 1970s.Jeter, the five-time World Series champion with the New York Yankees, also took some time to sign a few autographs:Other baseball legends on-hand Wednesday included Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, CC Sabathia and Ryan Howard.

The “Fam Jam” Celebrity Softball Game will air tape-delayed on MLB Network at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The MLB at Rickwood Field game between the Giants and St. Louis Cardinals — billed as “A Tribute to the Negro Leagues” — begins at 6:15 p.m., with live television coverage on Fox.
