A student government resolution 'urges' the college’s non-profit foundation to cut ties with any company that has Israeli business connections.
Towson University became the latest university Tuesday to join a national student-led movement demanding schools cut financial ties with Israel amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
Alana Fithian-Wilson, an elected TU student government member, said she proposed the divestment initiative after two fellow students approached her in class. The resolution condemns Israel’s involvement in the Israel-Hamas war in three out of four clauses. Fithian-Wilson said a clause mentioning Hamas was added after protests from several student organizations. The article refers to the recognized terrorist organization as a "militant group" but notes that they returned Israeli hostages alive after their October 7 attack on Israel.
The U.S. Department of State designated Harakat al-Muqaqama al-Islamiya, known more commonly as Hamas, as a foreign terrorist organization on October 8, 1997. Hamas’s translated name from Arabic to English is the Islamic Resistance Movement.I will that not only does this bill not support Hamas, or any entities that are inciting violence in Israel or Gaza at this time, but I will also say this bill is not antisemitic,” Fithian-Wilson said.
