DeGise explained her version of the events that fateful day, her feelings on the sentencing and the effect the sometimes hateful criticism has had on her.
“I will say that the people who know me know that I would never deliberately hurt another human being,” DeGise said before going into an abridged timeline of the day.
“I did continue on with my morning and my day and around lunch saw my car and realized I may have been in an accident where someone’s property or even another person was probably hurt or possibly hurt and I was immediately distraught. Colin Devries of SafeStreets JC and bike advocate Kevin Bing have called on DeGise to resign, pointed out that during the court hearing she admitted she was aware she struck Black and that she should have stopped and rendered aid.
“I wanted to handle this privately, DeGise said. “I didn’t ever want anything to be misconstrued with my words, my intentions, my actions. I also have a great deal of respect for Mr. Black, too, for him wanting to go through this privately and not engage publicly.”“Some people have chosen to be hurtful during this situation,” she said. “And I can understand their anger and their disappointment.
