They each played football at the highest high school, college and NFL levels – even playing against each other three times in the NFL. And they did so with the same tenet – tough fundamental defense never goes out of style.Weddle’s Rancho Bernardo team led the way with a stifling defense Friday, besting Burnett’s visiting Del Norte squad, 28-14, in the league opener for both.
“Obviously we’re physical with me and my line in the trenches,” junior tackle Lucas Winkler said. “We got our linebackers and our safeties are super physical. Nobody can mess with our defense. Defense is our strong point.” He ran for two touchdowns and threw for two long touchdowns as he completed 10 of 13 passes for 190 yards. He ran the ball 15 times for 49 yards.
